Lumen Metabolic Health Company Reveals Major Impact of Ramadan Fasting on Fat Burn

Lumen, the creators of the world’s first metabolism measurement device through the breath, are revealing the results of their research which measured the metabolism of 2,000 users fasting across the Middle East, Asia and the UK during the holy month of Ramadan.

Lumen is a handheld device that can tell you if you’re burning fats or carbs in real-time through the CO2 in the breath. Users that fasted throughout the month had the additional option to tag their metabolism measurements before and after breaking the fast for Iftar or before and after eating at sunrise for Suhoor.

The largest metabolic health platform in the world, Lumen has a database of over 1 million metabolism measurements a month. According to data gathered from the Lumen app , 40% of users ended up burning fat as a fuel source overall. An additional data point also reveals that out of this group of fasting users, 80% were burning carbs for energy after the Iftar meal. This possibly indicates a higher capacity to burn through carb stores throughout the night since almost half of users were still able to wake up in fat burn even after processing mostly carbs during the Iftar meal.

Compared to the start of the holy month of Ramadan, we see that users are more carb adaptive since they’re able to consume carbs after Iftar and still wake up in fat burn the next day. That ability to switch between fuel sources is key to training your metabolism to be more flexible,” says Barak Alon, head of data at Lumen.

Throughout the month, Lumen also partnered with Nike trainer Nesrine Dally, the first woman to compete in a Muay Thai competition in Thailand wearing a hijab. Together with Lumen, Nesrine championed metabolic flexibility and nutrition during Ramadan. She used Lumen to track the impact of fasting on her metabolism with the ability to tag Iftar and Suhoor meals, in addition to tracking her regular training.

The Lumen not only gives you real-time feedback and accurate results, it offers nutritional guidance to support you achieving your health and fitness goals. Stop guessing, start testing and understanding your unique body with Lumen,” says Nesrine Dally, Nike trainer.

Lumen encourages fasting to support metabolic flexibility, or our body’s ability to switch between carbs and fats as a fuel source efficiently. Research (Calcada et alGormsen et al) finds that having a flexible metabolism has a profound role in assessing a person’s long-term health.

People with good metabolic flexibility:

  • Are at lower risk of developing obesity, diabetes and metabolic disorders.
  • Are in a better position to gain muscle and perform better during workouts;
  • Find it easier to lose weight and maintain it

In collaboration with San Francisco State University, Lumen has been published and peer-reviewed and have validated an ongoing study launched in 2020, which shows the validity of Lumen® to detect changes in metabolic fuel utilization in a comparable manner with a laboratory standard metabolic cart, providing the ability for real-time metabolic information for users under any circumstances.

About Lumen

Lumen helps people improve their health and fitness through technology on the forefront of personalized nutrition and metabolism. Conceived and designed by twin sisters, physiology PhDs and Ironman winners, Lumen harnesses the power of our breath to measure metabolism, which is closely linked to weight, fitness and personal health. The Lumen device measures metabolism in a single breath, in less than a minute, which previously was only possible through an hour-long lab test. Lumen devices ship globally, with the app available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
